Duchess reigns in Galway and Oranmore

The Holian connections certainly had a good bitch last year in the form of Bossa Nova Babe the Grace Bruton Champion Bitch Stake winner in Clonmel last year. It might well be the case that they’ve got an even better bitch this year in the form of Duchess, now a three time All Age Bitch Stake winner following today’s success in Loughrea at the Galway and Oranmore meeting. Like Bossa Nova, Duchess is a daughter of Bexhill Eoin and Oaks winner Rith Gan Gaisce and today’s win follows successes in Glin and Loughrea. Duchess saw off Crafty Diviso in the deciding course.

There was also delight for the Cavan connections of Corriga Rebel who proved successful in the All Age Cup. This was Rebel’s first outing of the season, having won a good Trial Stake in Castletowngeoghegan last year, and the son of Janey MacAroo proved successful doing all his running from the white collar. Rebel got the better of Last Emperor in the final.

In the Derby Trial Stake there was delight for Shane Flanagan and Kieran Browne as Wheres Cranny (there really should be an apostrophe in there!) booked his Powerstown Park ticket. The son of Murtys Blaze and Rock Music is the second dog in this litter to secure passage to the National Meeting with Blazing Music proving successful in Ballinagar. Maxie Collins and Blueview Charlie lost out to Cranny in the final.

The Oaks Trial Stake was lifted by Great Ability for owners Daniel O’Connor and Ned Murphy. This was a first Trial Stake winner in her first litter for Specialist, a daughter of Dedicated. She could well prove to be an interesting addition to the breeding ranks. There was double disappointment for the Divily’s with Crafty Opello losing out in the final having also been beaten in the Bitch Stake final.
