It was a good day for Michael Dunphy as his dogs claimed both the Deise Cup and the Derby Trial Stake at the meeting in Dungarvan. Indeed Droopys Bestie climbed to the top of the Champion Stakes leaderboard with a victory over Catrionas Joy.
Bestie, already a winner in Waterford and in Enniscorthy, now moves onto 12 points at the head of the race for the Champion Stakes. That should comfortably see him into the Powerstown Park showpiece. Bestie, owned by the M-M-G syndicate which I believe to be Michael Dunphy, Michael Monahan and Glen Healy, could be a real contender in the first few days of February.
Droopys Rover claimed the dog Trial Stake beating Breezing Johnny in the final. A son of Kingsmill Dynamo and Bower Sign, Rover had previously reached the 3rd round in Enniscorthy where he was beaten by eventual winner Sunfire Nova. Johnny, a semi-finalist Fermoy and withdrawn finalist in Cappoquin, will have time for one more go a reaching Clonmel all being well.
In the Oaks Trial Stake Donegal Honey claimed the honours, for Sean Moloney. A daughter of Mafi Magic and Slieveroe Lady, she got the better of Hiphip in the final. This was her fourth outing having previously reached the 3rd round twice. Hiphip lost out in her second final of the season having lost out to Upup and Away in Ennis-Clarecastle.
