With all the qualifiers for the Oaks now set, it’s about time I took a look at what is an extremely open betting market for this year’s Oaks. Cappoquin qualifier Turbo Julie heads the betting at present with both major firms at 8-1. She got the better of outright second favourite Careful Betty in the first round of her win, Betty currently priced at 10-1. Ocean Hannalora is another who created all the right sort of vibes following her victory at Limerick City and she’s available at 12-1. She’s changed kennel since her win and is well regarded.
Three ladies who impressed in puppy stakes are available in the 14-1 to 16-1 range. Bank Perspective did nothing wrong enroute to victory in Old Kilcullen, Call Her Dresden had lost out there but impressed in Abbeyfeale while Somelittlething caught the eye of some shrewd judges in Mooncoin.
A couple of ladies who had slipped under the radar but may be worth keeping an eye on are Ballyverry Snowy, Skellig Rose and Fancy Rae Baker. The former won her Trial Stake at Glanworth, in a stake that produced plenty of Trial Stake winners. The daughter of Soundmanpaddy produced some eye catching times and Berkie’s certainly been keeping her onside cutting her price last week to 16-1
Skellig Rose is well related and her clocks at Cork were extremely eye catching while the reports were also very positive. She’s a sister of Skellig Wish who went off Derby favourite in 2012 and a half sister of Windfarm Hill, the Derby favourite last year. Just as a comparison her semi-final time of 9.43 in the Cork Trial Stake compares very favourably with both All Age Dogs and the dog Trial Stake. I think she offers plenty of value at 20-1 with Boyles.
The final bitch worth taking a look at is Fancy Rae Baker the Oaks Trial Stake winner at Edenderry. She won what was certainly one of the most competitive Trial Stakes of the year and is currently best priced at 40-1. Recent years have seen outsiders do well in the Oaks and Fancy could well be the one this year. Some people may have stamina concerns because she’s out of Central City but 6 times up Edenderry is certainly one test that is similar at least to Clonmel. She may provide each way value.
Edit: Another who I should really have given a hat tip to is Ballarue New. I’m normally all over bitches who have won a reserve before winning a full Trial Stake and this lady is no different. Anything this daughter of Kingsmill Dynamo and Newinn Droopy has done to date has been from the top drawer. I’m in no rush to pick holes in her form. It wouldn’t surprise me if she’s there on the Monday morning!
