O’Meara Cup in Thurles difficult to predict

Given the week that’s in it (jam packed!) I’m going to have to make some of these previews a little briefer than I’d like to have them. The O’Meara Cup in Thurles has a fairly open draw with the bookmakers going 3-1 the field.

Front Runners

As a betting heat this is one I’d run a million miles from because I’m struggling to make sense of it. More precisely I could make a case for quite a few of these. Taking the favourites from the top quarter I’d have to plump for Connells Cu from Legion Express. Connells Cu won his Trial Stake at Templetuohy as a pup and came here at this time last season losing out in the final to Glenlea Sonny when well up on the clock. He only made one other appearance last season withdrawn in the second round in Old Kilcullen. The 3-1 favourite in the top half of the draw is third season dog Legion Express. He should get the better of Wicklow Hill but I’d struggle to see him getting the better of Connells Cu.

Sallinger was consistent last season constantly getting over a couple of rounds and if he can do that here he’ll be well in contention. He’s 5-1 and probably represents some value. Central Adviser has had one outing this season in Cashel and went well in his opening round before finding Kingsmill Rover too good in the second round. He has ability and could well go close here.

In the third quarter Coshair Slane is probably a deserving favourite given his Trial Stake win last season. He’s had an outing and should be in good shape for a real crack at the weekend. His biggest danger in the quarter should probably be Said You Could who put up some smart clocks en-route to the semi-final in Ardpatrick last season. He didn’t appear after that and if sound he could well be a real threat.

In the bottom quarter Father Flash is probably the dog best primed to contest for honours here having claimed victory in the 8 dog cup in Liscannor. Eire Loose One had an outing in Edenderry last weekend and might well have come on for the run. He might just have enough to make the semi-finals.
