Roquefort Barney gave himself every chance of making the Kevin Smith Champion Stakes and Avenue Ranger booked his place at Powerstown for the stake following today’s North Cork Cup at Millstreet. Roquefort overcame the challenge of Lochbo Charlie this morning enroute to claiming the Cup, Avenue Ranger withdrawn in the final, his place at Clonmel already secured. The son of Murtys Gang and Foxhill Rio, a full brother of Blueview Sam, won the Cup at Galway and Oranmore earlier in the season and with this success he should just into the top 16 in the Champion Stakes standings.
In the Derby Trial Stake their was a first Derby qualifier for the Crafty Kennels as Crafty Tornado, who came into the stake as the first reserve, claimed victory in the final from My Friend Paddy. Crafty, is a son of the 1996 Derby winner Tullamore and Crafty Estado. He had three previous outings running to a semi-final at Ardpatrick where he was beaten by winner Galtee Boy and third round appearances at Trim and Gorey.
In the Oaks Trial Stake, Bated Breath, who had been backed from 4-1 to 2-1 with Boyles earlier in the week justified that faith claiming her ticket. Owned by the Dead Poets Society Syndicate, the daughter of Adios Alonso and Exact Science got the decision from Why Tanyard Dara in the final. Bated Breath had run at Tradaree and South Clare on her previous outings reaching the second round at South Clare where she was beaten by runner-up Skellig Blonde.
