Angel to rise above the field in Abbeydorney?

The last of this weeks previews is for the Horgan Cup in Abbeydorney a Cup that is due to see Serene Angel finally make his seasonal bow. As things stand it’s a strong looking stake but I’ve got a niggling doubt that it may cut up a bit.

Front Runners

As things stand Bower King looks a decent bet in the red collar. In three outings last season he was beaten just once, in the fourth round in Lixnaw by Wicked Monk. He won the Co. Cork Trial Stake in decent fashion clocking a couple of lengths clear of the rest of the field. He was withdrawn in the second round of the Derby but won a Cup on his reappearance this season at Liscannor. He could make himself a front runner for the Champion Stakes with a strong performance here. In the top quarter Barrack Bolt might well be his biggest danger but he’d need to improve on his efforts so far this season.

Sturdyandstaunch is the obvious front runner in the second quarter, reaching the semi-final of the Desmond Cup on his first appearance this year and coming from a kennel in good form. Both Smart Kid, the Champion Working Member winner at Sevenhouses, and Madtogojam are well thought of by connections and could pose a real threat if opposing. Walk Away Boy is an interesting runner, appearing just twice last season and going well on both runs. He’s not without a chance.

I could make an argument for almost all the dogs in the bottom half of the Cup draw running well here but the standout is clearly Corn na Feile winner and Irish Cup semi-finalist Serene Angel. On paper at least Brownes Kitchen should provide him with his sternest test in the quarter. Buncurrig Bay, Jimmy The Kid and Doomore Dave have some decent form as well on their  record but should be turn up and bring his A-game, Angel might just be unstoppable.
