Needham Work claims the Paddy Doyle Memorial Cup in Johnstown and Urlingford

Needham Work proved his class in Johnstown and Urlingford this afternoon as he got the better of Ivy Hill Time to win the Paddy Doyle Memorial Cup. The Irish Cup holder has now given himself at least one shot to claim his place in this season’s Champion Stakes should connections so desire. Well fancied before coursing and overnight he justified that favouritism to take the top prize.

Ballyverry Baby meanwhile continued her spectacular season claiming her third Cup of the season. Geroid Cashman’s dog, trained by Dennis O’Driscoll, had already won Cups in New Ross and Kilflynn before getting the better of Mantann Maple in today’s deciding course. The daughter of Kyle James and Mountain Guest is now at the top of the Champion Bitch Stake leaderboard.

The Derby Trial Stake saw Newinn Whisper, a son of Newinn Wonder and Newinn Droopy, claim his ticket for Clonmel for the Newinn All Over Syndicate. This was the March pups second outing of the season, he had previously caught the eye at Listowel where he was beaten in the semi-final of the 64 dog stake by winner True North. He got the better of Voice in the final.

The Oaks Trial Stake saw 4-1 overnight chance Killacolla Kiwi, a daughter of Kingsmill Dynamo and Killacolla Gold, get the better of Skellig Bright in the decider to take the honours. Owned by the Killacolla Syndicate, she was beaten in the third round in Galway and Oranmore by eventual winner Vim And Vigour.

Bodens ‘rockets’ to victory at Ardpatrick meeting

Bodens Rocket his first silverware at the Ardpatrick and Kilfinane meeting today in Kilmallock. The son of Mafi Magic and Ballyshannon Tri had reached the final of the Galbally Trial Stake last season and held off the advances of Dark Lord to win the Cup this afternoon. Owned by Ronan Sweeney, Bodens Rocket give himself a shot of making some of the season’s end of year meetings with his win.

Isnt She Magic was one of the unlucky ladies of last season running up three Trial Stakes in three outings. The daughter of Mafi Magic and Class Attraction got her tonsils out after her run in Kilflynn on the opening weekend of the season and that seems to have done the trick as she got the better of Cup Of Ambition in the final. Having only entered the stake as a reserve, she’ll be one to keep an eye on over the rest of the season.

Both Trial Stake winners on Sunday created favourable impressions over the course of the weekend. Bower Wonder, a son of Newinn Wonder and Bower Sign, claimed the Derby Trial Stake for John Saunders. Making his first outing of the season, he got the better of Carrigmore Shaw in the final. A half brother of Droopys Bestie and Kingsmill Dynamo, he’ll be an interesting runner in Clonmel.

In the Oaks Trial Stake, Skellig Jewel took the honours giving the O’Driscoll their first Trial Stake winner of the season. The daughter of Adios Alonso and Oaks winner Skellig Babe had previously reached the Trial Stake final in Miltown Malbay on her only other start. She beat Asset Centre, a daughter of Skellig Wave in the final. The Skellig pups seem to be improving every week, (Skellig Sky and Skellig Bright both reached finals this week) and they’ll be worth keeping an eye over the last 6 weeks or so of qualifying for the Clonmel classics.
