Mulboy Branan all but confirmed his place in the Kevin Smith Champion Stakes this after jumping from 15th spot in the table into 3rd position as he claimed the Laois Cup in Borris-in-Ossory. Owned by Mickey McCall, Branan a son of Adios Alonso and Mulboy Girl had to do things the hard way accounting first for double cup winner Call Up Pal and then for Derby finalist Portane All In enroute to the final, where he was declared winner after Tarmons Alonso was withdrawn.
The Derby Trial Stake went the way of Chapel Lane, owned by Aisling and Mark O’Donovan. Chapel Lane had been well fancied when falling at the semi-final in Knockgraffon and made no mistake today accounting for Almighty Man in the final. The son of Adios Alonso and Jamaica Jane was making his third appearance of the season. A brother of Oaks favourite Laurdella Dani he’ll be one who should enjoy the unique challenge Powerstown Park presents.
The Reserve Oaks Trial Stake brought success for Sweden as Lars and Anita Wicander’s Wi Can Rose took the spoils. A beautifully bred daughter of Adios Alonso and Bossa Nova Babe, she saw off the challenge of Bower Judy in the final. This was her fourth outing of the season, a second round appearance at Old Kilcullen a previous best effort.
