We didn’t have to look too far to find storylines at the Ennis-Clarecastle meeting with a number of notable performances. The Oaks Trial Stake ticket was won today by Ougham Honey, for Luke Kilcoyne of Tubbercurry. Honey provides a first Trial Stake winner for the unlucky Kilkeale Hero and a Trial Stake winner for Kilcoyne’s useful bitch Ougham Ellen. Allowdale Aine was withdrawn prior to the final.
What was most remarkable about Honey’s victory was that her mother, Ougham Ellen was also competing in the All Age Bitch Stake, reaching the final. She went down to Skellig Jewel in the decider, the one lady in last year’s Oaks field that looked like she might give Oaks winner Graceandglamour some headaches. The daughter of Adios Alonso and Skellig Jewel will be one keep an eye on as the season takes its course.
The All Age Cup saw Ivy Hill Time complete the first part of an Ivy Hill double when he saw off the challenge of Bonding Session to claim the honours. The son of Musical Time and Leigh Smokey won at Sevenhouses in his puppy season before running up two stakes last season. He made a better start this term.
Kennel mate Ivy Hill Trad took the Reserve Derby Trial Stake with the son of Adios Alonso and Uptown Angel taking the honours from Colossal Image. Owned by Noel Hehir, Ivy Hill Trad will no doubt go in search of a full ticket later in the season.
