Choctaw claimed Champion Bitch Stake place with victory at East Donegal

Undoubtedly the story of this meeting was the performance of Choctaw Squaw who guaranteed herself a place in the Grace Bruton Champion Bitch Stake with victory in the Hugh Duffy All Age Bitch Stake. Choctaw, an Oaks quarter-finalist last season, had run to the final of the 32 runner Corn Cuchullain on Tuesday, narrowly losing out to Howdododo in the final. While she wasn’t expected to take her place here, any subsequent 12 day ban would have all but ended her season. Connections took their chance here and  the lady duly obliged. She got the better of Central Majestic in the semi-final, a bitch who had beat her at the Cavan meeting, and Heart Strings in the final a bitch she had beaten in the opening round in Dundalk on Monday. She is owned by Feargal O’Donnell and is an  daughter of Johnny Casanova and Dungill.

Blueview Huggle, twice denied in finals last season, claimed the James Magee Memorial Cup as he got the better of the track bred Beaming Bully. Huggle reached the final here 12 months ago as a pup before being withdrawn. He was also beaten in the Westmeath Trial Stake final. The son of Blueview Sam and Foxhill Goldie is owned by the O’Sullivan family.

Central Avenger provided Brendan Duffy and his Central kennel with a first Trial Stake winner of the season when Central Avenger got the better of Deetown Alec to claim his ticket to Powerstown. The son of Tullamore and Central Heroine had three outings this season including recent efforts at Newcastlewest (2nd round) and Dundalk (1st round) before collecting at the Lifford venue.

The Oaks Trial Stake went to Gripwell Nancy, twice a runner up this season. Owned by Patrick and Nancy Grannell, this lady had a reached the final in Liscannor and Ballinagar and the semi-final in Johnstown and Urlingford. The daughter of Thomas The Tank and Champion Bitch Stake runner up Lizs Touch got the better of Welsh Lesson to claim the place in Powerstown.

Reikers Island lays down Derby credentials at Corn na Feile

Reikers Island justified his favouritism to claim the Corn na Feile Puppy title at Abbeyfeale getting the better of Lodge Hill in the final. The Dr Paddy Kelly owned and Gerry Holian trained son of Adios Alonso and Blades of Glory had shown serious ability in his Trial Stake win in Westmeath and again showed the same turn of foot in Abbeyfeale. Now a 12-1 shot for the Derby, Reikers like his litter brother Blades of Fire will be one others are hoping to avoid early in the Derby. Lodge Hill, still the second reserve in the Derby will be hoping for a few late withdrawals from the Derby.

The Corn na Feile All Age Stake went to last season’s Derby Trial Stake winner Octane Wonder who saw off Kyle Mozart in the deciding course. The son of Newinn Wonder and Dynalite was a 2-1 shot overnight for owners Timothy Nolan and Maurice O’Connor. This was his second outing of the season having previously been withdrawn in the semi-final in Newcastlewest.

The Derby Trial Stake saw something of a surprise as Floating Victor, a 6-1 shot overnight, got the better of fancied Jamaica Jude in the semi-final and Killacolla Tank in the final to claim the 55th Derby ticket of the season. A son of Kyle King and Floating Spirit, and owned by Colin Wallace, Floating Victor had shown well in Glin and Listowel on his two previous starts reaching the final of the Trial Stake at the latter. Runner up Killacolla Tank’s previous best effort saw him reach the fourth round.

The Oaks Trial Stake also produced a final upset as Jumeriah Glory, a litter sister of Reikers Island was upset by Iberostar in the dying strides. Iberostar, owned by Michael Larkin, twice a runner up this season in Mallow and Cappoquin, and a daughter of Adios Alonso and Duarigle Magic claimed victory. She’ll be an interesting contender in Clonmel and one no one will want to meet.

Howdododo does the business at Centenary Dundalk meeting

Howdododo, the TA Morris winner from the 2016 National Meeting made no mistake to catapult himself into Champion Stakes contention with victory in the Corn Cuchullain at Dundalk. He had to do it the hard way in the final coming from behind to shade the verdict from the game Choctaw Squaw. Owned by the Cheese and Chips Syndicate – the Carr family- in Westmeath, the son of Johnny Casanova and Your Symbollic added the Corn Cuchullain to the Cup won in Balbriggan earlier in the season. His only defeat this year was to Tractorman in the Carlow semi-final. The runner up Choctaw Squaw saw herself move into the Champion Bitch Stake places claiming the 6 points and €1,700 on offer.

The Derby Trial Stake went the way of Only The Lonely, a son of March Is On and Joint Account. Owned by Carol Deery, Only The Lonely was making his fourth outing of the season, he best of those was a final defeat in New Ross to Mulboy Hunter. He got the better of Stowaway James in the final, a dog who had been a warm order favourite on the final morning and who had previously run well in East Donegal.

The Oaks Trial Stake was claimed by Rosskeen Rising, a daughter of Adios Alonso and Skellig Babe. Owned by Gertrude Donnelly, Rising got the better of Go On Mavis in the final. This was her second outing of the season, having previously lost in the second round in Trim to runner-up Ardmore Magic. Rosskeen got the better of Dark Brown Hair the Dungannon runner-up in the semi-final.
