Colonel claims Troy Electrical Puppy victory at Old Kilcullen

Rosskeen Colonel laid down his Derby credentials at Old Kilcullen on Thursday when he claimed the Troy Electrical Puppy Cup from Tankofftom. The Carlow Trial Stake winner had been a 4-6 shot with Bet Browne overnight after beating impressive Regional winner Kilkillogue in his opening course. Seamus Donnelly’s runner then saw off Westmeath Oaks qualifier Shournagh Line and Mallow Derby qualifier Tankofftom in the final. A son of Mafi Magic and Loyal Lyric he’ll certainly be one to keep an eye on in Clonmel.

The JE Brennan All Age Cup saw Maker Of Rules deny Tractorman in the deciding course. The Mick Murphy trained son of Kyle James and Funny Honey, owned by Basil Holian the four and a half year old had a bye this morning with the withdrawal of Blueview Rio and he claimed his first cup in over 3 years, since winning his Trial Stake in Milltown-Malbay in 2013. He was in good form however coming off a runners up spot in Cavan a few weeks ago. Runner-up Tractorman will be glad of the Champion Stakes points but will probably need another point scoring effort to ensure his place in Clonmel.

Gerry Holian enjoyed success on the day with the Noreen and Kieran McManus owned Illwaitforyou collecting at the first time of asking today. A daughter of Razor Ashmore and the McManus’ excellent Champion Bitch Stake winning Collect Me Now, this was her second appearance of the season, having lost out to the winner Try Colour in the decider in Cavan on her only other appearance. Indeed this was the second time these two bitches had met, runner up Pebbles Be Nice losing out to this lady for a second time in the final.

The Derby Trial Stake saw the Brendan Farrelly trained and Fr Dan Dunne owned Tullamoy Thomas book his place at the National Meeting with a victory over Ballarue Kyle. Tullamoy, an April whelp by Thomas The Tank out of Tullamoy Queen, had made two previous outings this season, losing out in the second round in Westmeath (another TS winner from this Trial Stake) and in the third round in Carlow.

The All Age Bitch Stake saw a not unexpected victory for Kingsmill Ariel, a third of the season further boosting her Champion Bitch Stake credentials. A winner in New Ross and Crohane, she got the better of Storming Nellie in the final. Owned by the Roche and Fitzpatrick Syndicate, the daughter of Johnny Casanova and Kingsmill Chanel has been one of the stars of this season and she now sits on top of the Champion Bitch Stake table.
