Blades of Fire dominate Derby market

Just to help us track the movements in the Derby Betting over the next month I thought I’d post the betting as things stand now. The betting has fairly taken shape over the last few weeks with the big Kerry meetings throwing up what seems like a contender every weekend.

Heading the market is Blades of Fire as he has done since winning his Trial Stake. Word was out about Blades prior to his debut in Loughrea and despite the shock final defeat he bounced back in stunning style to win his Trial Stake in Rathkeale. Trained by Gerry Holian he’s certainly in the right hands for Clonmel. The one worry would be how well he’ll stand up to the unique Powerstown Park test. As Bet Browne note in their preview, you wouldn’t want to meet him through the first four rounds. Half brother Kyle Bruce, Black Barracuda and Kilkeale Hero ran out of gas at the semi-final stage however. Can Blades go two runs further.

Newcastlewest has the habit of throwing up some good winners and last weekend was no different with Duarigle Desmond looking more than useful on his way to winning the Derby Trial Stake. As short as a 10-1 chance now with the sponsors he’ll be worth keeping an eye on.

Gerry Holian is well represented at the top of the betting with Wi Can Riki and Reikers Island both prominent in the betting. The form from both Trial Stakes looks fairly strong so it’ll be interesting to see how they go if produced again before Clonmel.

A quartet of Kerry Trial Stake winners sit at 16-1 with Wiseguy Mark, Killacolla Jet, Away Razor and Ballymac Vale all handled by shrewd connections.  It’ll be interesting to see how the form holds up outside the Kingdom.

Another man with a decent hand is Owen McKenna with Newinn Oak and Ballygerard Buzz both likely to improve from impressive winning debuts. Of the others around the 20-1 mark Rosskeen Colonel showed decent form to beat three Trial Stake winners to win the Troy Electrical Puppy Cup, while Wheres Mr Wilks and Ashcharlesoliver look well matched on their Crohane showing. Likewise Carmac Chaos, Post Graduate and Path Way were impressive in winning their Trial Stakes. Any improvement should put them right in the mix.
