Adios Alonso leads the way in end of season sire standings

With the final Trial Stakes of the season having been run in Cork yesterday, I’m going to take a little time to reflect on the season just gone this weekend before beginning to preview the National Meeting on Monday. The first thing up is the sire totals for the season.

As I’ve stated on more than one occasion, these tables are only a guide as to what sires have dogs winning Trial Stakes. They don’t tell you how many dogs or litters each particular sire had on the ground. Those statistics will emerge in time (I’m sure Den’s already on it) but for now we only have the raw figures. It should also be borne in mind that even those figures don’t tell you anything about the quality of bitches that each dog has had.

The Figures

Adios Alonso and Kyle James led the way in terms of litters on the ground and it’s no surprise that they lead the way in terms of Trial Stake and Reserve Trial Stake winners this season. Adios Alonso finished the season with 35 winners in total, that’s made up of 22 dogs and 13 bitches. Kyle James has had 32 winners in total, 14 dogs and 18 bitches. Mafi Magic pushed the leading pair the entire season and has had some very useful contenders heading to Powerstown Park.

Some of the younger sires have done very well with limited numbers, Thomas The Tank and Killimor Matey both having very good starts to their careers at stud. In total 30 sires had winners of some description or another this season, with a further 6 sires having offspring coming up just short.

Quick summary of sire tables

With just a handful of meetings remaining, things at the top of the sire charts are very right with Adios Alonso and Kyle James jostling to have the most qualifiers at the National Meeting. Mafi Magic is a close third while there’s a gap back to the chasing pack with Razor Ashmore and Thomas The Tank having 8 Trial Stake and Reserve Trial Stake winners between them.

I’ll post a more complete table next week when the season concludes as well as for All Age Stakes.

A quick look at the sire charts

Heading into the festive period it’s probably timely to get a look at the current state of the Sire table. Kyle James enjoyed a very good last week or so and has moved clear of Adios Alonso at the top. Alonso has 22 Trial Stake and Reserve Trial Stake winners to his name to date. Oddly he seems to do better with dogs than bitches, with 17 Dog TS and RTS winners to just 5 Bitch TS and RTS winners. Mafi Magic splits perfectly down the middle with 9 winners and 9 runners-up with both dogs and bitches. Given that Alonso has already thrown both an Oaks winner and a Champion Bitch Stake winner it’s particularly odd. It might just be a quirk.

Further down Thomas The Tank and Razor Ashmore have put some daylight between themselves and the rest of the pack. It’ll be interesting to see how things change over Christmas.

Cumbawn Ellen leads the breeding chart

With the ‘regular’ season entering it’s last month I thought it was time we took a look at the brood bitches who were throwing Trial Stake winners with their litters for this season. There are some familiar names at the top of the list. Leading the way is Cumbawn Ellen who in her second litter to Kyle James has thrown now fewer than 5 Trial Stake and Reserve Trial Stake winners this season. Second in the table at the minute is Blades of Glory a bitch who is already proven and who has had a very good litter this season with 3 winners and 3 runners up. Drumcrow Carol has thrown winners again in her second litter to a coursing sire and while the well related Lady Twinkletoes has also produced three winners. See the full Trial Stake table here:

*It should be noted that if a dog or bitch runs up a Trial Stake and then wins one they are counted twice. If they run up two Trial Stakes they are counted twice.

Of the broods to have thrown a Trial Stake runner up and not a winner, there are a few this season. Ballyina Lady and Fiery Ruby lead the chart, Blueview Sanual twice running up stakes helping Ruby onto that mark.

Big three clear but Tank leads the chasing pack

The ‘Big Three’, Adios Alonso, Kyle James and Mafi Magic, are clear at the top of the sire rankings for Trial Stake pups at present but Thomas The Tank is hot on their heels. The ‘freshman’ sire enjoyed a productive weekend with an Oaks Trial Stake winner in Johnstown and Urlingford (where he also had the runner-up) and a Reserve Derby Trial Stake winner in Doon. He currently has 6 Trial Stake or Reserve Trial Stake winners in total and 3 runners-up.

At the top Mafi Magic also had a positive weekend with three Trial Stake winners with his litter to Class Attraction producing new Oaks joint-favourite Manntan Maple, his litter to Newinn All In threw the Tobar Na Malt the Oaks Trial Stake winner in Lixnaw and his litter to Tromora Babe produced Tromora Master, the Derby Trial Stake winner at the Kerry venue.
